This is us. The Wild Geese. No one actually calls us that, I came up with the name because I sing my kids to sleep each night with the song 'Favourite things' from the 'Sound of Music'. Then I came across the poem by Mary Oliver of the same name and I knew that I had found the right name for us.
My name's Nat. I'm Welsh. Not Welsh ancestry, I'm bonafide Welsh. Although my heart will always belong to Wales, Spain does a good job of trying to steal it. I like making things, mainly out of random junk that other people would throw out. Don't worry that's not an Etsy plug, you don't have to buy a fridge magnet made out of baby teeth and bottle tops.
My husband's name is Ivan. He's Slovak but he's lived outside of Slovakia so long that he's forgotten that. He has a passion for photography but he's also amazing at drawing cars, aliens and random monsters to scare our kids with.
Then there's these two cuties. Enzo and Tai. Now I'm not biased in the slightest but they are definitely the most amazing kids you'll ever meet. Enzo also loves photography and wants to create his own film one day. Tai, on the other hand, only wants to do it because Enzo's doing it.
We make videos about our life. Mostly Spain based but also from our travels here and there. Some of them are hopefully helpful and informative, some of them are just beautiful memories that we want to keep for posterity.
Now for some history....
Way, waaay back in 2008, we got married. It was a fabulous gold lamé affair held in Slovakia and we found ourselves honeymooning in Lanzarote in the Canary Islands (it was meant to be Morocco, but the less said about that the better).
We fell deeply head over heels in love with the volcanic island and one year later we moved there. After spending five years in the Canaries, in Lanzarote and Gran Canaria, we decided to move back to the UK. I was six months pregnant with our second child, Tai. Maybe it was the hormones, I don't know, but I felt a need to be near my family.
I resigned myself to the idea that I wouldn't move back to Spain until the kids had finished school and we were old and retiring. But then the whole Brexit malarkey happened and our world felt like it was turning upside down.
We decided to move back to Spain but to the mainland this time. We pored over maps of the southern coast looking for our next home. We reviewed the schools in the area for the kids and read about other expats who'd been there and done that before us. We visited all along the areas we'd researched and eventually, we found our perfect place on the Costa Tropical.
Here, we have the best of both worlds. We're right on the coast but just under 2 hours away we have the Sierra Nevada mountain range for some of the best skiing and snowboarding in Europe. We feel like we've found our forever home but you know how the saying goes - Never say never!
Our future plans
In June 2019 we're planning on embarking on a 3-month long road trip around Europe. With kids and the dogs! We're hoping to take in as many countries as we can on our whistlestop tour. We'll also be testing ourselves with some wild camping in the countries that allow it and getting off the beaten path around Europe.
We'll be putting the vlogs and blogs up once we've completed our epic trip but you'll be able to follow along on our journey via our Instagram where we'll be posting lots of pictures and stories. If you have any suggestions for places to visit or events that are taking place then we'd love to hear from you!
We'll also be exploring many Spanish cities in the south such as Seville, Granada, Malaga and Cordoba as well as bringing you our perspective on what it's like to live in Spain.
